Hernando County BOCC Votes Down Cash Ordinance Once Again

Commissioner Steve Champion isn't giving up. For the fourth time, he brought his proposed cash acceptance ordinance to the Hernando County BOCC this weekend. It was voted down 3-1, with Commissioner John Allocco calling it an unnecessary "government bureaucracy." Champion insists only coins and bills are true legal tender.
But County Attorney Jon Jouben argues debit cards are "essentially the same as cash." Allocco also pointed out state law already bans debit card surcharges and that many businesses would be exempt anyway. Champion vows to bring it back. Should the county dictate how Spring Hill businesses handle payments, or is this government overreach?

BOCC Says No to Short-Term Rentals Ordinance

Did you hear what happened at the BOCC meeting last week? Spring Hill residents are talking about the Board of County Commissioners' decisive 3-1 vote on July 28th, striking down a second revision of the proposed short-term rental ordinance. This means the matter, which aimed to regulate Airbnbs and VRBOs in our community, won't even get a second reading.
Commissioners cited state law (FS 509) limiting local control, with Commissioner Ryan Amsler calling it "creating a mini-DBPR." Development Services Planning Director Omar DePablo estimated two dedicated code enforcement officers would be needed.
