Loud family dinners, Frank Sinatra, and prayers to Saint Anthony paint a vibrant picture of the heritage shaping two local students who just earned significant scholarships. On May 13, 2026, Sons of Italy Una Famiglia Lodge #2882 awarded $1000 scholarships each to Gia Marie Valenti of Nature Coast Tech and Julianna Morrongiello from Bishop McLaughlin Catholic. The lodge celebrated their exceptional academics and extensive extracurricular involvement at a special dinner, with President Annmarie Barbaro Guadagnino introducing the winners.

Valenti, a talented cheerleader, weightlifter, and flag football player, also dedicates time to church and volunteering. She heads to Indiana Wesleyan University for pre-physical therapy. Morrongiello, active in volleyball, flag football, and HOSA, will attend Saint Leo University, carrying forward her family’s values of hard work and perseverance. Both young women received Dante medals for their achievements.

Hernando County Superintendent of Schools Ray Pinder highlighted their accomplishments, noting they’ve already climbed one mountain. What higher, steeper challenges await these inspiring local graduates?

Nearly $19 million in state funds will revamp downtown Brooksville's main thoroughfares before the city takes full control, promising an end to destructive truck traffic and a boost for local businesses. City Council voted 4-1 on May 18 to adopt a Road Transfer Agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), allowing the city to manage segments of U.S. 41 and U.S. 98. This move aims to curb persistent issues like heavy trucks causing damage and hindering walkability, problems Mayor Christa Tanner directly observed, including a pedestrian hit by a car.

FDOT will fund an $18,899,219 project for resurfacing Broad Street (U.S. 41) and Jefferson Street (U.S. 98), along with safety enhancements, before the transfer happens tentatively in early 2027. Once the roads officially switch, Brooksville gains authority to enforce signage and speed limits through the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, shifting away from Florida Highway Patrol oversight. This empowers the city to dictate traffic flow and enhance downtown's economic vitality.

With local control, the council can now explore options like converting one-way streets to a two-way system or creating additional parking, decisions previously out of their hands. Though Councilwoman Betty Erhard cast the lone dissenting vote, questioning FDOT's motivations and future maintenance costs, the majority embraced the opportunity. What kind of downtown will emerge once the city finally steers its own streets?

College debt? Five local students just sidestepped a piece of it, thanks to the generosity and hard work of Oak Hill Hospital volunteers. At a May 21 ceremony, the Oak Hill Hospital’s Volunteer Association (OHHVA) awarded varying scholarships to promising local talent. These funds, primarily from the hospital's gift shop proceeds, directly support aspiring nurses, speech pathologists, and biomedical professionals right here in our community.

Two $5,000 scholarships honored deceased volunteers Tony Mosca and Phyllis Chiswell. Kathy Mosca presented Tony's award to Kazel Vincent, who aims for a nursing career at Pasco Hernando State College (PHSC). Rosemary Sanchez received Phyllis's scholarship for completing nursing prerequisites during high school. Sara Haehnel earned $3,000 for her Speech Pathology studies at the University of South Florida, while Gionetshly (Gio) Adorno and Keith Klien each secured $2,000, pursuing nursing at PHSC and diagnostic radiology, respectively. Our local volunteers, a dedicated team of over 200, including 40 teens, log more than 30,000 hours annually, making these dreams possible. Who else in our community will they empower next?

Three deaths linked to an alleged U-turn by a semi-tractor trailer driver spurred Florida to sue other states, but the U.S. Supreme Court just slammed the brakes on that legal battle. Florida wanted the High Court to prevent California and Washington from issuing commercial driver's licenses to immigrants without legal status, arguing those states ignored federal safety standards and endangered citizens.

Florida filed its suit two months after authorities arrested Harjinder Singh, a California-based truck driver, in August following a St. Lucie County turnpike crash that killed three people. While the court offered no reasons for its denial, Justice Clarence Thomas, in a rare dissent joined by Justice Samuel Alito, argued the court should have heard Florida's claims, noting states "cannot refuse to hear suits between States" and Florida "has nowhere else to bring" them.

This ruling arrives as Florida tightened its own licensing rules, starting February 6 by administering driver’s license tests only in English. Lawmakers also recently failed in an effort to mandate impounding trucks and fining owners if officers identified undocumented drivers. Will this Supreme Court decision force Florida to rethink its approach to immigration enforcement, or will it simply find new legal battlegrounds?

Bad news is good business. Not everyone buys it.

Every morning, financial news follows the same script. Headlines panic, coverage catastrophises, and somewhere inside the noise is the story that actually matters — the one that tells you where the opportunity sits, not just where the fear is pointing.

Most sources have stopped looking. The alarm is easier to sell.

The Daily Upside was created by Wall Street insiders for readers who crave real insight over recycled anxiety. Five minutes of global business and finance, before the noise sets the agenda — just the facts, context, and analysis your decisions need.

Join 1M readers — including managing directors and principals at some of Wall Street’s largest institutions — who trust The Daily Upside to filter through the chaos.

The upsides are always there. We’ll find them before breakfast.
