Who knew Brooksville packed such a comedic punch? Friday night, Live Oak Theatre proved a small town can host big laughs as Troupe du Jour delivered a family-friendly improv show, delighting audiences for just $10 or $15. Seven comedians cycled through games, skits, and songs, offering a much-needed escape and solidifying Brooksville's place in the local comedy scene.

Darryl Knapp, Live Oak's improv director with 30 years of experience, hosted the evening, thrilled to spread laughter across all ages. Audiences roared when Eli Oliveri, a Live Oak performer also known from "Cinderella," spontaneously improvised a full song on guitar from a shouted title, "My Strawberries Ain't Got No Seeds." Audience member Mary Elwin praised the comedians' quick responses, noting comedy brings a crucial "relief" and "release of tension."

Troupe du Jour's performance wasn't just a night out; it showcased the tremendous talent thriving right here in Brooksville, talent Oliveri suggested could grace Broadway. What other unexpected cultural gems await discovery in our own backyard?

Springstead senior Addisson Osborne seized the spotlight at the District Athletics Awards Show last week, earning "Female Athlete of the Year" after dominating three sports and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Her remarkable achievements, alongside Nature Coast's six team championships and five coaching honors, celebrated Hernando County's most outstanding high school athletes.

Nature Coast Sharks powered through the spring season, bagging six team champion honors—double Springstead's three. They shared titles in baseball, girls tennis, and boys weightlifting. Springstead Eagles swept girls track and field awards, including Osborne's "Field Athlete of the Year." Central's Paul Kern also took home a "coach of the year" trophy for boys weightlifting, while Weeki Wachee's Bella Shields and Springstead's Theodore Toler earned "female" and "male scholar athlete of the year" respectively, both juniors with 4.0 unweighted GPAs who excelled in multiple sports.

The awards showcased exceptional talent and dedication across all five district high schools. What future accomplishments will these rising stars bring to our local sports scene next season?

Only four athletic directors in a broad regional section of Florida earned a prestigious honor this year, and Weeki Wachee’s Patrick McHugh was one of them. The Florida Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (FIAAA) recently named McHugh its Section 2 Athletic Administrator of the Year, recognizing his seven years of dedicated leadership in Hornets sports. His commitment goes far beyond daily duties, impacting student-athletes, coaches, and the entire district.

McHugh champions school spirit, boosting student interest and participation by hosting in-school games for sports like volleyball, basketball, and wrestling. He also brought innovative athletic platforms, including an athletic trainer program and sportsYou, to the district. Weeki Wachee also showcased its strong hosting capabilities under his direction, successfully staging numerous conference, district, and regional events, like the FHSAA Regional Wrestling Tournament. This state-level recognition also follows McHugh earning his Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) distinction, demonstrating his deep expertise in interscholastic athletic administration.

District AD Dustin Kupcik hails McHugh as one of an elite group of interscholastic athletic administrators nationwide. What new heights will Weeki Wachee athletics achieve with such distinguished leadership?

Classic cars don't just fill Pastor Gordon "Chip" Winans' garage; they create a unique Brooksville sanctuary, transforming Sunday service into a vibrant car meet where faith and fellowship intertwine. This unconventional approach has already helped members like Roy Tate rediscover their spiritual path, blending a love for automobiles with communal worship.

Winans, a 37-year minister and avid car enthusiast with a popular YouTube channel, founded Hot Rod Church after realizing the car community needed a new concept. His non-denominational church gathers 30-40 people on service Sundays, fostering an open environment where attendees sing, pray, listen, and talk about cars for up to an hour after the closing prayer. Offerings go directly to community members in need, not to the church or Winans himself, who pays for expenses out of pocket.

With services in a garage, this "back to basics" ministry challenges traditional notions of worship. How might this innovative approach continue to reshape how locals connect both with their faith and fellow car lovers?
