News & Information

Thousands of Floridians could save over $4,100 on their annual property tax bills, as a new proposal heads to the November ballot. The Legislature just approved a plan to phase out property taxes for many, sending it for voter approval after Monday's special session. This "Save Our Homes" initiative, supported by Governor DeSantis, seeks to ease the burden of soaring property taxes, which climbed from $32 billion to $60 billion statewide since 2019, driven by rapid population growth.

The plan isn't a full elimination but rather an escalating homestead exemption, starting with a $150,000 exemption and reaching $250,000 by 2028, with legislators aiming for more. Critics worried about funding cuts for local services, but Governor DeSantis insists counties will still receive more total property taxes than a few years ago. He also proposes using the state's $5.7 billion "rainy day" fund to help with the transition, a fund that quadrupled during his governorship. This initiative specifically targets homeowners with properties valued at $500,000 or less, covering 92 percent of Florida's property owners.

With billions in tax relief already enacted by this administration, will voters approve this latest "bold initiative" and reshape Florida's financial future this November?

Hernando County youth, facing the highest rate of "disconnected" young people in the region, just gained a vital new resource. Brooksville's Boys & Girls Club officially opened its doors at Coach Lorenzo Hamilton, Sr. Park on May 22, filling a critical gap after another local youth organization closed last year. The Greater Hernando Chamber of Commerce marked the occasion with a large ribbon-cutting, welcoming a 1,500-square-foot facility designed for learning, growth, and safe play.

This new hub offers laptops, STEM projects, quiet reading nooks, and outdoor activities like a playground and ping pong. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office calls it a "positive and safe environment" for youth to learn and thrive through mentorship and educational opportunities. Partners like the Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department, Pastors United As One, the Tax Redevelopment Advisory Committee, and Community Conversations collaborated to make this project a reality for local families.

Summer programs run June 8 to July 31, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with after-school activities planned for the school year. While weekly costs are $75, eligible families can access financial assistance and scholarships. Will this new community pillar truly transform outcomes for Hernando’s young people, offering them brighter futures?

Drivers navigating Cortez Boulevard will face overnight lane closures starting Sunday, impacting a critical stretch near the Mondon Hill Road and Spring Lake Highway intersection in Hernando County. Construction crews will shut down the left lane in both directions on US 98 / SR 50 (Cortez Blvd.), specifically impacting traffic approaching and moving through the area where Mondon Hill Road and Spring Lake Highway meet.

These scheduled nighttime closures begin Sunday, June 7, and run through Thursday, June 11, spanning five consecutive nights. Each evening, from 8 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. the following morning, commuters and local residents should anticipate significant changes to their usual routes on this busy Hernando County thoroughfare. This ongoing construction project means anyone relying on Cortez Boulevard during late-night or early-morning hours will need to plan for potential delays and adjust their travel times. What alternative routes might local drivers consider to avoid these predictable nightly disruptions next week?
