Inside Spring Hill, Issue #035
May 4, 2026

Spring Hill isn’t slowing down, and neither is this week’s lineup. From local athletes heading to the State Finals to a community-driven benefit supporting veterans and first responders, there’s a lot happening that actually matters. Eight standout track and field athletes are stepping onto the state stage this Thursday, representing the area across relays, distance, and field events. Meanwhile, the Brooksville Moose Lodge is turning up the volume Saturday night with live music, auctions, and a mission to support the Veterans’ HEAT Factory, a group tackling the very real impact of PTSD without government funding.

There’s also a milestone worth noting, Community Legal Services is marking 60 years of helping thousands of Central Floridians access legal support they otherwise couldn’t afford. And behind the scenes, correctional officers and jail staff across Hernando County are getting overdue recognition for the work most people never see.

Add in local events, food trucks, and live entertainment, and you’ve got a week that’s anything but quiet.

News & Information

Seven local athletes clinched their spots in the State Track & Field Finals this Thursday, May 7th, poised to represent our community against the state's best. Our very own Sharks will send a strong contingent to compete, with eight stars ready for the ultimate challenge.

Jasir Harvin, Jonathan Edney, Dominick Picariello, Noah Carpenter, Joey Lizor, Kason O’Neill, Ethan Warford, and Zayden McKenzie each qualified across various events. Edney and Warford will compete in both the 4x1 and 4x4 relays, while Picariello tackles the 4x1, 4x4, and the 400-meter race. Carpenter earned his place in both the 1600 and 3200-meter events. Harvin and McKenzie join the 4x1 team, O’Neill runs the 4x4, and Lizor launches himself into the Javelin throw.

With such a diverse group of qualifiers across relays, sprints, distance, and field events, how will our Sharks fare against the state's top competition?

Crucial support for veterans and first responders battling Post Traumatic Stress arrives this Saturday as the Brooksville Moose Lodge hosts a benefit for the Veterans’ HEAT Factory. This local event, spearheaded by bandleader Michael Morelli, offers a day of music and community, combating "the invisible injury" for dozens of local families through a charity that receives no government funding and relies solely on volunteer efforts.

Morelli’s band, Yearbook Radio, and another group, Local Harmony, will perform at the lodge’s new outdoor gathering place, featuring a stage and Tiki Hut. Attendees should bring their own chairs due to limited seating. The Moose Lodge will donate a portion of food and beverage sales, adding to the suggested $5 admission, a 50/50 drawing, and silent auction items donated by local businesses. Gus Guadagnino, VHF’s founder, expressed deep gratitude for the community support making the event possible.

VHF, founded nine years ago, will use funds from this 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. event to continue assisting those who served. Guadagnino also promises an important announcement about the Veterans’ HEAT Factory’s new outreach program. What vital new initiative will this community-driven organization unveil to further serve our local heroes?

Ninety-two percent of low-income households needing legal help don't receive enough of it, a stark reality Community Legal Services (CLS) has battled for six decades. County board members and Representative Jeff Holcomb recently joined Spring Hill residents, celebrating CLS's 60 years providing free legal services to over 10,000 Central Floridians annually.

Founded in 1966 with just 13 lawyers and a small team, CLS now fields over 160 individuals across a dozen counties, ensuring the law works for everyone, not just those who can afford it. They resolve critical civil legal needs from landlord-tenant disputes and consumer debt to protecting seniors from unlawful evictions and helping domestic violence survivors. Director of Advocacy Morgan Cardinal emphasized CLS offers opportunities for legal information and services at no cost.

This enduring legacy includes helping a family secure proper educational access for their special needs child through advocacy. As CLS embarks on a year-long "tour" of its 12 service counties in 2026, with an event planned next month in Lake County, what ongoing legal challenges will they tackle next for our community members?

Behind the walls of our county jail, essential workers who maintain daily safety and order just earned a week-long public salute from local leadership. Hernando County Commissioners officially designated May 3–9, 2026, as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week on April 28, 2026, recognizing the vital contributions of dedicated jail staff.

This important proclamation specifically honors the dedication of correctional officers, along with nurses, technicians, secretaries, clerks, and control room operators. These are the individuals whose daily efforts maintain safety, order, and secure environments within our jail facilities. Staff members from the Hernando County Jail proudly accepted the official recognition.

As this special week approaches, how will our community demonstrate its appreciation for the commitment and service these indispensable professionals provide to Hernando County?
