A firefighter’s unique gift, a handcrafted wooden American flag meticulously carved with a chainsaw, now proudly hangs in the Hernando County Courthouse. Hernando County Fire Rescue Captain Andy Bryant presented this one-of-a-kind artwork, hand-painted, to the Board of County Commissioners on May 26, 2026. He made the generous donation in honor of the United States of America’s upcoming 250th birthday, ensuring a lasting display of patriotism in the Commission Chambers for years to come.
This presentation officially launched the county’s ongoing celebration of the nation’s birthday. As part of these festivities, the BOCC will welcome various patriotic organizations and demonstrations to one meeting every month, transforming regular sessions into a dynamic showcase of local pride and national spirit.

At least three Hernando County families recently lost beloved pets to sudden, unexplained deaths, sparking an urgent warning from Animal Services about potential poisonings. Many common household products, including certain foods like chocolate or grapes, along with medications, pesticides, and lawn chemicals, pose deadly threats to pets and wildlife right in our own backyards.
Hernando County Sheriff's Office Animal Services urges residents to store all toxic substances securely and out of animal reach. They advise following label instructions for pesticides and fertilizers, and never leaving food scraps, medications, or unknown substances accessible to pets. Supervising animals outdoors and promptly removing any suspicious materials from your property also prevent exposure.
If you suspect an animal has ingested a harmful substance, seek veterinary care without delay and report the incident to local law enforcement or Animal Services immediately. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control also offers 24/7 emergency consultation. Quick action can save a life, but will a community-wide effort be enough to keep our pets safe from these hidden dangers?

Reporting code compliance concerns in Hernando County just got a major digital upgrade. Residents now use a brand-new online system, allowing them to submit issues and track their progress with greater ease and efficiency.
This significant shift ends the use of the previous Comcate system for all new submissions. County officials assure residents that any requests previously submitted through the old system have successfully transferred to the new platform and await review by a Code Compliance Officer. The new online portal promises not only simpler reporting but also real-time updates on request statuses, aiming to streamline how the county addresses neighborhood concerns.
To utilize this updated system, residents simply visit www.hernandocounty.us/public-safety/code-compliance/, create and register an account, then follow the prompts to report a violation. Will this modern, digital pathway genuinely simplify resolving community issues and foster quicker resolutions for everyone?
