News & Information
Bullets flew, yet a chaplain knelt to administer last rites for fallen Marines during a brutal 1968 Vietnam ambush. T. Dunne, a local, vividly recounts how Jesuit priest Father Gerlach defied heavy enemy fire, miraculously unharmed, to comfort the dying—a harrowing personal reflection among several Hernando County residents share this Memorial Day, honoring those who sacrificed all for our nation.
These heartfelt stories include Imani D. Asukile's remembrance of Marine Corps 1st Lt. Dennis Vacenovsky, a beloved Hernando High science teacher and coach killed in Vietnam in 1970 after returning from his brother's funeral. Classmates continue to honor Vacenovsky, a former outstanding athlete, and plan his nomination for the school's Sports Hall of Fame, raising his name again at Dade City’s Indian Pond Cemetery service. County Commissioner Brian Hawkins urges everyone to pause, reflect, and live lives worthy of such extraordinary sacrifice, a sentiment Spring Hill veteran Julius Ricks echoes, focusing on cherished memories of fallen comrades.
These powerful testaments remind us Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend. What enduring lessons do these individual acts of courage teach us about service and remembrance in our own community as we strive to live lives worthy of their sacrifice?

A cherished community tradition, once celebrated annually at Moton School, sprang back to life last Saturday. The Black Educators’ Caucus (BEC) revived the vibrant May Day celebration at Coach Lorenzo Hamilton Park, honoring a legacy of joy and unity that provided safe fellowship for Black families during segregation. Community members decorated a Maypole, enjoyed ample food and games, and crowned Naala Westbrooke as princess, Sophia Harrington as queen, and Prince Harris as king.
The event featured lively entertainment, including roller skate ballet, line dancing, high-energy hip-hop, and a classic car show, alongside an appearance by the Buffalo Soldiers. Organizers paid special tribute to 99-year-old Howard DeLaine, a respected community pillar, embodying the "Sankofa" principle: moving forward while bringing the best of the past. Cynthia Brown-Jackson echoed this theme, stating, “We are the seeds… nurtured [by] those who came before us.” Organizers recognized BEC President Gina ‘Cookie’ Hall as Woman of the Year, Woman of the Decade, and Person of the Year for her leadership.
With next year’s celebration already in the works, this renewed May Day event demonstrated how a community cherishes its history and cultivates future generations. What new traditions will sprout from these re-planted seeds next spring?

Hernando County residents seeking services from the Sheriff’s Office administrative departments will find doors closed today. The agency officially paused its regular administrative operations for Memorial Day, directly observing the holiday dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.
However, don't mistake that administrative closure for a lapse in protection or emergency response. While administrative tasks take a well-deserved break, the vital arms of local law enforcement — specifically the Emergency Communications Center, Patrol Division, and Detention Center — continue operating without interruption. These crucial teams remain fully operational, serving our community around the clock, 24/7, ensuring residents' safety remains a top priority even on a significant national holiday.
As Hernando County collectively observes this important day of remembrance, this blend of quiet reflection and unwavering vigilance offers a unique perspective on our community's spirit and commitment. How will you personally honor the memory of service and sacrifice within this framework today?

Ultimate sacrifice stands at the forefront for Hernando County this Memorial Day. The local government explicitly honors and remembers the brave men and women who gave their lives serving our nation. Their immense courage, unwavering dedication, and profound selflessness will forever resonate within our community's memory. This pivotal remembrance ensures their ultimate contribution will never be forgotten.
County officials emphasize a moment of profound reflection on the freedoms we all enjoy, directly attributable to those who gave absolutely everything for our country. This solemn observance highlights the depth of their commitment and the lasting impact of their actions. As we gather with loved ones this Memorial Day, Hernando County calls for quiet contemplation. How will our community collectively uphold the legacy of those who paid the ultimate price?
