News & Information

More than tripling its previous size, Hernando County just broke ground on an 11,000-square-foot Children’s Advocacy Center dedicated to helping child sexual abuse victims. YouThrive and local leaders officially launched the new facility on Jacqueline Road, a critical expansion from the 3,400-square-foot center they outgrew over 18 years. Director Janine Kell, who spearheaded the project, explained the center provides a child-friendly environment for victims to discuss abuse, receive forensic medical exams, and access trauma therapy.

This essential $3 million project, with $2 million already secured, relies on state, federal, and local grants, alongside ongoing fundraising efforts. Lawmakers Blaise Ingoglia and Jeff Holcomb helped secure state funding appropriations for the center, which aims for completion in 18 to 24 months. YouThrive still needs community support to raise the remaining $1 million, offering room sponsorships like the conference room already claimed by Tampa General Hospital. They also continually seek snack donations for children visiting the center for several hours.

This center promises expanded hope and healing for child abuse victims for decades to come. What larger impact will this new facility have on keeping Hernando County's children safe and supported?

Celebratory parades and festive gatherings fundamentally misunderstand Memorial Day, argue veterans who insist the holiday calls for solemn remembrance, not backyard parties. This tradition began in 1868 as Decoration Day, honoring fallen Civil War soldiers, and later broadened to include all service members who died. Many today fear commercialization now overshadows its true purpose.

Veterans emphasize a crucial distinction: Memorial Day honors those who died, while Veterans Day celebrates all who served. One decorated veteran, a Purple Heart recipient, protested a planned parade in the 1980s, asking, "How can you have a festival for people who died?" He called the day "solemn." In our community, we observe the day with a poignant flag exchange ceremony at the Rural Cemetery, where families donate flags for fallen loved ones. Boy Scouts raise and lower them to 'Taps.'

This quiet ceremony reminds us of the holiday's profound meaning, a lesson reinforced when a teacher brought middle school students. None mentioned parades when asked about Memorial Day's purpose. What does your community do to ensure future generations understand the gravity of this day?

Against a near-unanimous committee recommendation, Hernando School Board members rejected an application for new You Thrive elementary charter schools this week, leaving dozens of local families in limbo. Board members Kayce Hawkins, Shannon Rodriguez, and Susan Duval voted 3-2 to deny the Brooksville and Spring Hill schools, citing multiple concerns from the district's Supervisor of School Choice. Issues included missing application components, a vague staffing plan, and an unsustainable reliance on district staff for student support.

You Thrive, which merged with BEST Academy last summer, expressed disappointment through site administrator Jamie Young, who stated lawyers are working to address the board's concerns. The denial directly impacts families hoping to send their children to the Brooksville school for the 2026-2027 school year, with more students signed up than available spots. Adding another twist, the board's attorney, Robert Myers, warned the decision could face an appeal, potentially leading the state to overturn their vote. What happens next for You Thrive and these families if the state steps in?

High-quality youth development programs officially launched Friday, at Coach Lorenzo Hamilton Sr. Park, immediately expanding critical opportunities for local youth and families. This grand opening celebrates a significant new partnership between the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tampa Bay and Hernando County Parks & Recreation, promising essential resources directly in our community.

This collaboration means residents now access a vital range of youth development programs designed to empower young people. The Boys & Girls Clubs will deliver initiatives focusing on building character and leadership, fostering academic success, and promoting healthy lifestyles. These offerings provide crucial support for children's growth and development, ensuring more comprehensive programs are now readily available to those who need them most in our neighborhoods.

What profound impact will these expanded programs ultimately have on our community’s next generation, and how will they shape the future of our local families?
