Inside Spring Hill, Issue #041
May 10, 2026

The Hernando County Blueberry Festival takes over Florida Classic Park today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., bringing a full day of live music, local vendors, food trucks, entertainment, and community energy to Brooksville.

From lobster rolls and wood-fired pizza to live performances from Jocelyn Hobson and The Edisons, this weekend’s lineup is stacked with reasons to get out and enjoy what Hernando County has to offer.

There’s more happening across the area too. Sunflower fields and blackberry picking are drawing crowds, local markets are buzzing, and Mother’s Day weekend events continue throughout Spring Hill and Brooksville.

On the news side, county leaders are looking for residents to step into volunteer committee roles that help shape housing and construction decisions, while local athletes continue making headlines after Nature Coast’s Justin Delery posted the highest combined lifting total in the state at the FHSAA Championships.

If you were waiting for a perfect Florida weekend, this is probably it.

News & Information

Your expertise could directly shape crucial decisions for Hernando County, from housing to construction standards. County Commissioners currently seek skilled residents to fill vital volunteer roles on key committees, influencing everything from affordable housing strategies to building regulations.

They need specific experience. The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee requires professionals from banking, essential services, for-profit housing, and home building labor. For the Board of Construction and Regulation, they look for an Architect/Engineer and a Consumer Representative. To qualify, you must live in Hernando County and be a registered voter. These positions are voluntary, offering a chance to contribute without compensation.

Interested residents can pick up applications at the County Administrator’s Office, call 352-754-4002, or find them online at www.hernandocounty.us/committees. Submit your completed forms to [email protected]. Don't wait; the deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026. What critical decisions will these new committee members face first?

An 80-yard interception return for a touchdown in the final three minutes ripped a regional championship from the Hernando Leopards girls flag football team. The Leopards (14-4) held a late one-point lead against the undefeated Deltona Wolves (20-0) but ultimately fell 20-15 in Thursday's Region 2A FHSAA Final. Coach Tyson Ellis noted the team "missed some plays" and "didn’t execute offensively very well" in the second half, leading to the decisive loss.

Before the dramatic pick-six, Hernando built an early lead, with junior Aajyrah Adams snagging two interceptions to help secure a 15-14 halftime advantage. However, neither team scored an offensive touchdown in the second half, creating a tense stalemate until the Wolves' game-winning play.

Despite the tough outcome, optimism burns for next season. Coach Ellis expects every player back, including key juniors Adams, Alexis Sway, Carlie Grant, Ayana Kincade, and freshman La’Niveah Ford. Will this heartbreaking loss ignite the fire needed to propel these experienced Leopards to their ultimate goal: playing the state final game at the Bucs' facility?

Outlifted every single competitor across the entire state. Nature Coast senior Justin Delery, despite earning two silver medals at the FHSAA Class 2A Boys Weightlifting Championship on Wednesday, May 6, in Lakeland, posted the highest combined total weight, solidifying his legacy as his school's strongest lifter ever. Delery secured second place in both Olympic and Traditional categories, yet his 980-pound total surpassed all rivals, including those in heavier weight classes.

Delery's remarkable performance included hitting all nine lifts and setting a 25-pound personal record in the clean-and-jerk. He expressed immense pride in his third state appearance, leaving the school with "like eight records." Other local lifters also shone, bringing home medals: Nature Coast teammates Jayden Monroe-Acevado (4th) and Vicente Susca (5th) in Traditional, Hernando's Evan Richards (6th) in Traditional, and Springstead's Justin Saya (4th) in Traditional. Nature Coast finished seventh in team standings.

With multiple local athletes earning state recognition and coaches already planning for next season, what new records will our community lifters break as they continue to build their strength and confidence?
