Hernando County residents faced this reality in 1943, adapting to strict federal regulations on essentials like meat, sugar, and gasoline as the nation poured resources into World War II. Local families navigated tear-out stamps and point systems just to get weekly groceries.
Beyond rationing, the community rallied. Residents exceeded an $88,000 war bond quota and later purchased $139,731 in just four weeks, far surpassing a $107,000 quota in another campaign. Town businesses even closed for a local holiday to support the effort, while volunteers raised $3,615 for the Red Cross. Locals contributed to scrap and book drives, also manning an airplane warning post atop the courthouse from January through July.
Even as fires claimed local landmarks like the Dixie Theatre and the historic Bayport Hotel, Hernando State Bank reported significant growth and the county secured enough teachers despite a statewide shortage. Hernando County residents will find a wealth of essential services and resources at a special Community Resource Fair and Ribbon Cutting on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This family-friendly event marks the grand opening of the Tax Collector’s Spring Hill Office.
Local organizations will showcase offerings, including health resources from the Florida Department of Health and voter registration with the Supervisor of Elections. LifeSouth Blood Mobile will accept donations. Hernando County Library Services will sign up new patrons for library cards. Beyond valuable connections, the fair promises food trucks, a DJ, and activities to entertain children.
