Hernando County Commissioner Steve Champion won't seek a congressional seat after all, stepping aside to avoid a primary battle with incumbent Rep. Laurel Lee in the district's reshaped landscape. Champion initially announced his intent to run for the 15th District in late April, after legislative redistricting moved Hernando County out of Rep. Gus Bilirakis’s 12th District. However, Lee's decision to run in the new 15th prompted Champion to withdraw on May 12 via a Facebook post.
Champion expressed "overwhelming support" he received but declared, "I will not run against Congresswoman Laurel Lee. Our Republican majority is too important to jeopardize in any way.” He also offered to help Lee "understand her new counties." While no other GOP challengers have emerged, four Democratic contenders vie for their party's nomination.

Immediate payment demands for suspended permits are hitting Hernando County, targeting residents and businesses with a new email scam. The Development Services Department warns fake emails falsely claim permit suspensions and request immediate payment to reinstate them.
Crucially, Hernando County departments never request payment via wire transfers or unsolicited email demands. Official permit payments exclusively go through secure online portals. For legitimate services, always use Civic Access, Development Services' official online portal.
Remain vigilant: avoid clicking suspicious links and report any questionable permit-related emails to Development Services at (352) 754-4057. If you fell victim to this impersonation scam, file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov, including all available details. What clues can you spot to keep your wallet safe from these convincing fakes?
