News & Information

Customers could pocket $250 million thanks to a massive new 74.9-megawatt solar field that just fired up in northeast Hernando County. Duke Energy, in partnership with Florida A&M University, opened the 800-acre "Rattler Renewable Energy Center" last Friday, with FAMU leasing the property between Brooksville and Nobleton for the farm.

This local project contributes to Duke Energy’s larger statewide solar expansion. The company plans to construct 12 new solar sites across Florida by 2027, expecting these facilities to generate 900 MW and save customers $3 billion. By 2033, Duke Energy aims to boost its Florida solar capacity from 1,700 MW to over 6,100 MW.

Will this ambitious push for solar power truly deliver the promised long-term savings and energy reliability for our community?

Expect more dramatic flair and at least 14 eagle emojis per post on Springstead High's social media. Springstead High School officially appointed Frank the Eagle as its new Social Media Manager, signaling a bold new direction for the school's online presence. This unique hire promises to shake up how the school communicates, directly affecting students, parents, and anyone following their digital channels.

Frank brings a distinct resume to the role. He showcases enthusiastic screaming at sporting events, judges students out of dress code, and diligently collects Critter Coins. His experience also includes cultivating excessive school spirit, taking selfies, and aggressively staring down rival mascots. Frank wasted no time, already demanding the Facebook password and declaring all future announcements must be delivered "with more dramatic flair."

The community eagerly anticipates how Frank’s singular vision will truly transform Springstead’s digital footprint. Will his 14-emoji rule take hold?

Help is here for Hernando County residents bracing for hurricane season. The county's Floodplain Division offers two workshops this May to help residents prepare before a storm and recover safely afterward. Learn vital hurricane tips, safe recovery steps, and navigate post-storm permitting and resources during these sessions on May 26th.

Both workshops cover identical information, running from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM and again from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Residents will find them at the Hernando County Planning & Zoning Division, 1653 Blaise Dr. in Brooksville. Topics include hurricane preparedness tips, safe recovery steps, permitting information following storm damage, and recovery resources available to residents.

With hurricane season just around the corner, what steps will you take to secure your home and property this year?

A flood of candidates now vie for local congressional seats, creating a crowded field in newly redrawn U.S. House Districts 12 and 15. With the June 12 candidate qualifying deadline fast approaching, these districts, which collectively cover nearly all of Hernando and Pasco Counties, attract multiple challengers, including an incumbent living outside his district.

In District 12, Republican incumbent Gus Bilirakis, residing in Pinellas County, seeks re-election. He faces a primary challenge from Samantha June, plus Democrats Kimberly Overman – who switched her candidacy after redistricting – and NPA candidate Brandon Scrivener. Meanwhile, District 15 incumbent Laurel Lee defends her seat against Republican Hernando County Commissioner Steve Champion, who entered the race after redistricting made the seat more Republican. Several Democrats, including physician Darren McAuley, former CIA officer Chris Irziarry, and retired veteran Robert People, also challenge Lee, alongside Gen Z candidate Jose Engell.

This packed local political landscape promises a dynamic primary season for voters. As candidates finalize their campaigns, which hopefuls will secure their places on the November ballot?
