Remember that Sun-Journal bicentennial edition, tucked away 50 years ago in a time capsule? It just revealed a forgotten local giant: Nick Conner. This Hernando County rancher and state senator for Florida’s 9th district led parades, yet his story faded after 1995. What crucial community figures are we forgetting today?

Former newspaper man Craig Davis, who wrote "a thousand stories" for that bicentennial year, shared its front page. Now, The Hernando Sun prepares its own edition for a new time capsule, sealed July 4 at the Salute to America 250 event at Sandhill Scout Reservation. What stories from our Spring Hill will future generations discover?

As we near the 250th anniversary of the Declaration, discover the allies who made our freedom possible. The 1763 Treaty of Paris set the stage for France and Spain to secretly back the colonists. Did you know 19-year-old Marquis de Lafayette defied King Louis XVI, joining the fight and getting wounded at Brandywine?

But there's more. Spanish Governor Bernardo de Gálvez captured Baton Rouge and Mobile, Alabama. His forces took 1,000 British prisoners at Pensacola in 1781 after a single projectile killed 50 soldiers. These vital southern victories crippled British efforts, paving the way for Yorktown. How much more of our nation's birth story have you never heard?

Nature Coast's own Garrick Waggoner is officially headed to Southeastern University in Lakeland! His journey began with a standout performance during the 12-2 victory over Crystal River on April 7, catching the eye of coach Gabe Grinder. Waggoner, the Sharks' star shortstop, wrapped up his senior year with a stellar .429 batting average and 30 RBIs.

He won't be alone. Fellow co-captain Bryce Hewell is also joining him at Southeastern, and they're even planning to be roommates. Coach Dan Garofano praises Waggoner, calling him a "silent assassin," who made just four errors at shortstop all season. What's next for this Spring Hill standout as he takes his talent to the next level?

A new state law, HB 399, is forcing big changes right here in Hernando County. By January 2027, our local government must allow modular and manufactured homes in nearly any single-family zoned area, even places like commercial or agricultural districts. Development Services Planning Director Omar DePablo confirms no special hearings can be required.

But what does this mean for your neighborhood? Commissioner John Allocco voiced serious concerns, calling it an "illegal taking" that could reduce property values where traditional homes were once mandatory. With increased emergency shelter needs also on Director DePablo's mind, are our current community standards about to be fundamentally reshaped?

I'm 63 With $1.5M. Can I Spend $10K a Month?

You’ve saved $1.5 million. Now comes the real test.

Can it produce $10,000 a month, or will that pace drain your portfolio?

Most retirees do not get a clear answer until it is too late.

The issue is not just how much you have. It is whether your portfolio was built to pay you, not just grow.

That difference can determine whether your money lasts decades or starts breaking down early.

Sequence of returns, taxes on withdrawals, healthcare costs, and whether the 4% rule still applies all play a role.

Fiduciary advisors created a breakdown showing what drives sustainable income and why the same $1.5M can produce very different outcomes.

If you have $1M or more invested, do not guess.
