This week starts with a little bit of everything, local government, community wins, and the kind of random charm only this area can deliver.

We’re leading with Hernando County Commissioners taking up decisions that could affect your wallet, including possible changes to waste and fire service fees, while also reviewing major infrastructure projects and river restoration updates. We’re also covering adoptable pets making appearances at the Hernando County Fair, giving fairgoers a chance to leave with more than fried food and questionable financial choices. Add in Nature Coast Tech sending a full track and field roster to regionals, plus new rules for the Sheriff’s popular summer camps after past no-shows created empty spots.

Then we map out your next few days. The county fair continues, trivia night returns, networking events pop up, bingo is calling someone’s grandmother by name, kids night is on deck, line dancing lessons are back, and open mic comedy gives brave locals another chance to overshare in public.

If you want the stories that matter and the local pulse in one quick read, keep scrolling.

Adoptable pets are making special appearances at the annual Hernando County Fair, as Hernando County Sheriff's Office Animal Services brings them directly to fairgoers. This initiative offers a convenient way for residents to meet adorable animals seeking "furever" homes, with staff on hand now through May 2 to facilitate connections.

You can find Animal Services staff and a selection of pets on specific weekend dates: this Sunday, April 26th, from 1 PM to 10 PM. They return for the fair's final weekend, on Friday, May 1st, from 5 PM to 11 PM, and Saturday, May 2nd, from 1 PM to 11 PM. For those who miss the fair appearances or don't find their perfect match, the main shelter, located just blocks away, houses an even wider variety of pets ready for adoption.

Will one of these fair-visiting pets find their new home before the gates close for the season?

Hernando County homeowners face potential changes to their solid waste and fire service fees. County Commissioners will hold public hearings on these revised rates, alongside discussions about fire assessment impact fees, at their Tuesday, April 28, 2026 meeting. Commissioners will also award a significant $9.9 million contract for improvements to the Wiscon Water Treatment Plant and Hexam WTP chemical feed system, directly impacting our local infrastructure.

Commissioners will also deliberate on crucial legislative priorities for the 2027-2028 state session and consider a proposed revised public survey for residents near a potential Manatee Protection Zone. They plan to ratify Lowe's Community Impact Projects for Stewy’s Skate Park at Pioneer Park and Coach Lorenzo Hamilton Sr. Park, showcasing local community development. Additionally, Commissioners will cover a cooperative funding initiative for a septic-to-sewer feasibility study in Northwest Hernando and review maintenance reports for the Weeki Wachee River Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Restoration Project.

With such wide-ranging decisions on the table, what impact will these discussions have on our community's services, environment, and finances?

Our community celebrates as NCT's Track & Field team sends its full roster to regional competition. These dedicated athletes, proudly representing the "Sharks" and their impressive skills, officially secured their spots as Regional Qualifiers. This achievement clearly excites local supporters.

What new successes will these committed individuals achieve on the regional stage?

No-shows at past Sheriff's R.O.A.R. Summer Day Camps prompted a significant change for this year's enrollment: a new $25 non-refundable deposit. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office implemented the fee to prevent vacancies, ensuring more local children get a spot in the popular program for kids aged 6-12.

Parents planning to enroll their kids must first submit this $25 deposit per child via a link appearing on the Sheriff's Facebook page starting May 1, 2026. They will then receive a unique application link for each child. Each of the four action-packed, week-long sessions, running Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at local schools like Explorer K-8 and Nature Coast Tech, accommodates 60 children. The program prioritizes Hernando County kids who have never attended before, and each child can only attend one session. Drug forfeiture money funds the camp.

Will this new policy ensure more local children get a spot in the popular summer program, funded by drug forfeiture money?
