Millions just landed for aviation training right here in Brooksville. Governor Ron DeSantis awarded Pasco-Hernando State College a $3 million grant on June 10, funding a new Airframe and Power Plant program at the Brooksville-Tampa Regional Airport. This investment prepares an estimated 100 students annually for high-skilled aviation careers and relocates PHSC’s professional pilot program, creating a robust local pipeline for Florida’s growing aerospace industry.

The state’s job growth grant fund supplied the money, which will renovate labs and equip classrooms with essential airframes, tools, and instructional technology for hands-on learning. PHSC President Dr. Eric Hall called it "one of the most comprehensive aviation programs" in Florida, expecting it to bolster our region’s economy and position the state as a global aviation leader.

DeSantis highlighted the grant as part of his administration’s broader effort in education and job training, noting Florida is five years ahead of schedule on its goal to be the number one state for workforce education by 2030. What new career paths will this cutting-edge program open up for local students?

Residents across Hernando County just gained a major upgrade in emergency care. HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital's new South Emergency Campus opens its doors, providing crucial additional resources and promising quicker, full-service treatment right in the community. This expansion directly benefits everyone needing urgent medical attention, bringing state-of-the-art facilities closer to home.

The cutting-edge campus features 11 dedicated treatment rooms, including a specialized trauma bay ready for critical cases. It offers a comprehensive suite of on-site diagnostic capabilities, such as laboratory services, X-ray, CT scanning, and ultrasound. These advanced tools ensure immediate assessments and accurate diagnoses, directly leading to the quicker treatment patients need during emergencies.

How will this significant new facility reshape emergency medical services and patient outcomes throughout our growing community?

Commissioners sharply rejected a proposal to significantly increase Hernando County's fire assessment fees, openly questioning Fire Chief Paul Hasenmeier's leadership and plan at their June 9 meeting. Voting 4-0, the Board of County Commissioners kept the Municipal Services Benefit Unit (MSBU) fee flat, rejecting a plan Commissioner Steve Champion claimed would see the MSBU triple by 2027 and the department's overall budget almost triple its 2019 level by 2031. Brooksville, whose fire department the County absorbed in October 2025, will also join future budget discussions.

Champion, a vocal opponent of fee increases, questioned the need for new fire stations if the county cannot afford them, suggesting alternative solutions like closing old stations or reallocating personnel. While County Administrator Jeff Rogers pointed to nationwide trends like growth, increased service demand, competitive salaries, and state mandates driving up costs, commissioners instructed Chief Hasenmeier to review his department's budget and service levels assuming no fee hikes.

What changes will fire and emergency services face as the department reworks its finances without additional funding?

Nearly 2,000 new homes are headed for Hernando County, after the School Board cleared the way for two major developments between I-75 and Lockhart Road. Board members approved Black Jack Ridge, planning up to 978 houses, and Ginny Grove, with up to 907 units. They determined local schools have enough capacity for the influx of new students, as Florida law requires for such projects. This decision came without discussion on the consent agenda, signaling a significant expansion for our community. Separately, the board declined a developer's offer to set aside land for a school in the "Sunrise" subdivision, choosing impact fees instead.

Beyond development, residents brought pressing issues to the board. Brooksville resident Beverly Coe again criticized the board’s opening prayer, which Board Member Shannon Rodriguez defended. School board candidate Luciano Vignali called for better teacher pay to address vacancies, but Rodriguez noted improved teacher recruitment. Additionally, the Christian Family Coalition urged the board to incorporate "Baby Olivia" videos on gestational development into school curricula, with Carol Yakimo stating children need to understand "how we all came into this world."

As hundreds of new homes take shape and passionate debates continue, what kind of growth and challenges will define Hernando County's school system in the coming years?

Today marks a critical deadline for Hernando County voters. Residents must register or update their party affiliation by this date to participate in the August 18, 2026 Primary Election. You can do this easily online at hernandovotes.gov or in person at the Supervisor of Elections offices in Brooksville or Spring Hill during business hours.

Another important date: voters have until August 6 to request vote-by-mail ballots. If you prefer casting your ballot in person, early voting begins August 8 and runs through August 15, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at five specified locations county-wide. On Election Day, August 18, polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Remember, you must vote at your assigned precinct, and polling locations can change, so verify yours in advance.

Staying informed ensures your ballot counts. Verify your voter records and assigned precinct information at hernandovotes.gov or by calling the Hernando County Supervisor of Elections Office. With multiple pathways to the polls and key dates quickly approaching, what choices will Hernando County voters make to shape their community's future?
