News & Information

Citrus greening might finally face a worthy opponent, but a Brooksville farmer isn't ready to declare victory just yet. A newly approved citrus rootstock could help Florida growers fight the devastating disease. However, a local farmer says he wants more data first before he considers planting it.

This potential breakthrough offers hope to Florida growers battling greening, who constantly seek effective solutions. Yet, the hesitation from our local farmer highlights a critical need for proven results.

Will this new rootstock ultimately provide the sustained relief our local groves desperately need, or will skepticism about its long-term effectiveness persist?

Still kicking up her heels at 103, Bonnie Casper celebrated another vibrant birthday with a lively tea party at Vitality Living in Spring Hill this past Monday, June 1. Friends and staff surrounded Casper, one of Vitality Living's longest-standing residents, enjoying old tunes, dancing with area sales director Frankie Diaz, and sharing laughter. Her "Partea for 103," themed with her second-favorite color purple, even included a little alcohol to keep spirits high.

Engagement director Savannah Adams praised Casper as "strong and resilient," calling her "still trucking" and one of the community's healthiest residents. Casper herself perfectly captured the joyful occasion: "It feels so good to be this old and so much loved."

What more might Spring Hill's beloved centenarian inspire next year?

Zero "Budget Turkeys" are gobbling up our tax dollars in Hernando and Pasco Counties, setting our local state legislators apart from their colleagues across Florida. A new report from Florida TaxWatch, a nonpartisan watchdog, revealed Monday that while other counties face scrutiny for $829.7 million in questionable spending projects, our region’s lawmakers avoided any such flags, meaning they adhere to responsible spending processes.

Florida TaxWatch identifies "Budget Turkeys" as local projects added to the state’s appropriations bill without proper scrutiny or adherence to the budget process. This year's report flagged 621 projects statewide, totaling nearly $830 million, and noted hundreds more needing additional review. These projects often bypass established competitive grant programs, as seen in Citrus County where park projects totaling $1.3 million skipped standard reviews.

The Legislature recently passed a $114.5 billion budget, which now sits on Governor Ron DeSantis’s desk. He holds line-item veto power until July 1. While Florida TaxWatch offers its findings as a tool for the governor, it refrains from recommending specific cuts. Given last year’s $567 million in vetoes, what will the Governor decide for these questionable projects, and how will it impact communities that didn't follow the proper process?

Celebrating an extraordinary century of life, local resident June Anderson recently marked her 100th birthday, joined by a representative from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. Care Line Clerk Bud Brooks attended the special celebration, delivering heartfelt well wishes on behalf of Sheriff Al Nienhuis and the men and women of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

This remarkable centennial highlights the important work of the Sheriff's Office Care Line program, designed to support and connect with local residents. The office wished Ms. Anderson continued health, happiness, and many blessings, acknowledging her incredible milestone.

As our community applauds Ms. Anderson's remarkable achievement, it makes you wonder what other vital connections the Care Line program helps forge across Hernando County, celebrating milestones big and small.
