Residents cheered as Hernando County Commissioners approved a year-long freeze on new data centers, stopping development applications while the county studies their significant impacts on water, power, and neighborhoods. Commissioners, with unanimous public support, proactively enacted the 365-day moratorium because existing land-use codes simply don't address these facilities' heavy demands, including air handlers and generators, or their potential noise.
This pre-emptive move gives the Planning Division time to draft comprehensive regulations. Commissioner Brian Hawkins openly stated the goal: make it extremely difficult for data centers to build here, a sentiment echoed by residents and Commissioner John Allocco, who specifically voiced concerns about low-frequency sounds and potential health problems. The moratorium could extend an additional 120 days, allowing ample time to consult with experts and neighboring municipalities.
With Governor DeSantis signing legislation allowing local regulation of data centers, effective July 1, Hernando County now has the power to shape its future. Commissioners take a final adoption vote on July 7, 2026, giving our community an opportunity to define how it manages these resource-intensive operations.

Despite existing traffic at its lowest service level on US 19, Hernando County Commissioners unanimously approved Walmart's plan for a new gas station. This June 2, 2026, decision allows Wal-Mart Stores East, LP to build a fuel station next to its Spring Hill Supercenter on Commercial Way, on a parcel previously designated for overflow parking. The revision expands existing zoning to include fuel station operations.
Commissioners raised several questions during the meeting. Ryan Amsler asked about driver access; Development Services Director Omar DePablo explained the station would use the existing frontage road. Brian Hawkins questioned fuel delivery vehicles, prompting Planning Manager Michelle Miller to clarify they can use the frontage road but must not block it, a detail now added to county documents. Engineer Matt DeAngelo confirmed no direct access from US 19.
A traffic analysis had already rated the US 19 driveway serving the Supercenter at Level of Service ‘F’ – the lowest grade – during morning and evening peak hours. Commissioners did not discuss this study, which states existing traffic issues will continue regardless of the fuel station. Will a new gas station truly ease congestion or just add to the local bottleneck?

Turns out, that "novelty" item left at a local thrift store was a genuine human skull. Hernando County Sheriff's Office detectives are now urgently searching for the individual or individuals who dropped off the real human remains, along with other items, at the Jericho Ministries Thrift Store on Wiscon Road in Brooksville. The unexpected delivery happened between 11 a.m. and noon on May 16, 2026.
Investigators specifically want to identify and speak with the person who made the drop-off. They believe the individual(s) likely mistook the skull for a decorative prop, not realizing its true nature. This isn't just about recovering a strange item; detectives need to understand how human remains ended up in a donation bin, hoping to shed light on their origin and history.
The Sheriff's Office urges anyone with information that might assist their investigation to contact Detective Chris Kraft directly at 352-797-3734. As the community ponders this bizarre incident, one has to wonder: what path did these remains travel before landing on a thrift store shelf?

A heated debate over public prayer, including a shouting match with an audience member, consumed the Hernando County School Board's final meeting. Despite counsel's advice about state policy making denial difficult, the board still approved the Pineapple Cove Classical Academy charter school 4-1. Board Member Susan Duval blasted Tallahassee lawmakers for forcing "one-size-fits-all" solutions on local communities, though other members championed competition and capacity.
Resident Diane Lynbrook called for a moment of silence instead of the current opening prayer, arguing a "political agenda" fueled it. Board Member Mark Johnson defended prayer, citing historical precedent, while Board Member Shannon Rodriguez claimed the world would improve if students prayed. Board counsel Robert Myers cautioned courts rule inconsistently on prayer, noting silent prayer is covered but praying aloud presents a "legal gray area." Student Representative Jaserah Abdul-Rahim gave her final remarks, having endured a debate over eliminating her position due to social media criticism. She emphasized the role's importance, stating the debate caused more distress than the harassment itself.
What will these contentious debates mean for future state-local relations and student involvement in our schools?

Costco Shoppers Say This $35 Find Is a "Facelift" in a Bottle
If wrinkles and sagging skin are making you look older than you feel, this viral Costco beauty find is getting serious attention. Experts say Auvoria's Korean skincare serum targets the #1 cause of wrinkles people ignore — collagen-signal breakdown below the surface of the skin. Women nationwide say their skin looks visibly tighter, smoother, and years younger after only weeks of use. Now, the same formula flying off Costco shelves is available online without a membership.
