Hernando County Take Back Day is an opportunity to safely dispose of unneeded medications and work to clean out your medicine cabinet. Hernando County Take Back Day has helped Hernando residents easily rid their homes of unneeded medications; those that are old, unwanted, or expired.

The partnership with the Hernando Community Coalition, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, and Tampa General Hospitals - Spring Hill and Brooksville. Hernando County Take Back Day will protect Hernando County by being a healthier environment by offering safe disposal of prescription medications.

Summer fun returns to Buccaneer Bay this Saturday, June 20, with the Beach Bash, offering swimming, water slides, and the Lazy River. From 6 PM to 9 PM, the event offers summer fun under the stars.

The Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park host the bash. Attendees can purchase tickets in advance or at the gate. Admission costs $8 for adults and $6 for children aged 2–12.

Blue-Green Algae Advisory Issued for Silver Lake in Withlacoochee State Forest

Blue-green algae now floats in Silver Lake at Withlacoochee State Forest, prompting a public health advisory even as officials await toxin test results. Health officials detected the algae on June 15, urging residents and visitors to exercise caution immediately. Do not drink, swim, wade, or operate personal watercraft in areas showing visible blooms, discolored water, or unpleasant odors. Always wash skin and clothing thoroughly after any contact.

Keep pets and livestock away from affected waters; provide them alternate drinking sources. Never use contaminated water for cooking or washing dishes, since boiling does not remove algae toxins. While you can eat fillets from healthy fish, thoroughly cook them, discard the guts, and rinse them with tap or bottled water. Do not eat shellfish from waters experiencing blooms. Conditions can change rapidly, and some blue-green algae produce toxins harmful to people, pets, fish, and wildlife.

This type of algae, common in Florida's freshwaters, thrives in warm, sunny conditions with still water and excess nutrients. Some blue-green algae produce toxins that harm people, pets, fish, and other wildlife, with children and older adults especially vulnerable.
