Some weeks are packed with noise. This week has substance.
Today’s issue is one of those editions that reminds you how much is happening around Hernando County when you know where to look. Local students got the kind of day they’ll remember for years, sharing the field with professional athletes during a special crossover sports clinic built around confidence, teamwork, and chasing big dreams. We’re also covering a free local program that has quietly helped protect seniors and vulnerable residents for more than three decades, proving not every important story comes with flashing lights or headlines.
There’s more. Dive team training that keeps emergency crews sharp. A water safety event where kids can swim with firefighters. A state wildfire tracker every Florida resident should know about. And if your taste runs a little stranger, Brooksville’s historic May-Stringer House is back in the spotlight for ghost tours and unexplained happenings. Because naturally, Florida cannot resist being Florida.
Then we round it out with what to do this weekend, strawberry picking, trivia night, the county fair, live music, drag racing, comedy night, karaoke, and more.
If you want the signal without digging through ten different sources, keep scrolling.

Local elementary and middle school students recently experienced a unique sporting opportunity, sharing the field with professional athletes from both American football and international soccer. Sixty children from the Tampa Parks and Recreation Department participated in the "Crossover Clinic" on Sunday, April 19, 2026. This special event, held at the AdventHealth Training Center in Tampa, was part of a Premier League weekend fanfest.
The clinic offered a dynamic blend of flag football and soccer fundamentals, led by Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Nick Jackson and former Manchester United star Wes Brown. Jackson oversaw the flag football portion, guiding students through drills that honed footwork using ladders, taught proper flag-pulling techniques, and included a "cat-and-mouse" exercise to enhance agility. Brown, meanwhile, directed the soccer segment, emphasizing basic ball control and introducing many participants to a sport they were less familiar with.
Both professional athletes shared their positive impressions of the day. Jackson commended the young participants for their "energy, athleticism and attentiveness," noting their competitive spirit. He reflected on his own youth, recalling inspiration from a basketball camp two decades ago, and valued the chance to connect with the local community. Brown, who realized his dream playing for his hometown club, Manchester United, expressed his hope that the clinic would inspire young athletes to pursue their own aspirations, stating, "that's what it's all about, you know, dreams coming true." Seventh-grader Trinity Esdaile, one of the participants, echoed the positive sentiment, enjoying the physical activity and team camaraderie.

Local Dive Team Enhances Emergency Response Skills
The local Dive Team recently completed a focused training session, reinforcing critical abilities needed during emergency callouts. This exercise was designed to ensure the team remains fully prepared for any situation requiring their specialized expertise.
Team members actively participated in a simulated scenario, which was carefully structured to mirror the challenging conditions encountered during actual responses. This practical application of skills is a cornerstone of their ongoing readiness efforts.
Such regular and targeted training is essential. It guarantees the Dive Team can continue to respond quickly and safely, providing a vital layer of protection for our community in every potential emergency.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) continues to offer its free Care Line program, a vital service designed to provide regular welfare checks for residents living alone. Initiated over 30 years ago by former Sheriff Tom Mylander, the program was created in response to the challenges faced by numerous senior citizens in Hernando County who lived without nearby family or friends to check on them. The Care Line has operated consistently, seven days a week, 365 days a year, since its inception.
This essential program is available to Hernando County residents who are senior citizens living alone, individuals in ill health living alone, or those residing with someone else who is also in ill health or has diminished mental capacity, such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Prospective participants must complete an application, followed by a telephone "intake" interview with an HCSO clerk. This interview gathers necessary emergency information and allows the client to select a preferred 15-minute time slot, between 6 AM and 9:30 AM daily, for their routine call to the Care Line.
A crucial aspect of enrollment requires clients to sign a waiver authorizing an HCSO deputy to force entry into their residence if contact cannot be established. While clients are typically asked to provide information on hidden keys or other non-damaging entry methods, forced entry remains a last resort if a deputy believes a person's life is in jeopardy. The HCSO encourages the community to share information about this free and valuable program with friends, family, and local organizations, including doctors, nurses, rehab facilities, and churches.

For Florida residents seeking up-to-date information on active wildfires, a dedicated online resource is readily available. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), through its Florida Forest Service division, maintains a comprehensive website that tracks all current wildfire activity across the state. This valuable tool can be accessed directly at ffs.fiResponse.com/public, offering citizens a clear overview.
Beyond monitoring, officials are urging the public to take proactive steps to protect lives and property. Key recommendations include remaining alert and adhering strictly to guidance from local authorities. During periods of drought, outdoor burning should be avoided entirely. Additionally, individuals are reminded to exercise caution with equipment and vehicles that could potentially generate sparks. Preparing one's yard and home for wildfire is also highlighted as a critical preventative measure. Further safety tips and information are available online at BeWildfireReadyFL.com.

A recent segment from "Florida on a Tankful" highlighted the 1856 May-Stringer House in Brooksville, an Antebellum home that is a notable site for those "hunting for ghosts."
The article reports that this Brooksville residence is specifically identified as being home to ghost tours, attracting visitors interested in paranormal activity. Further details mention the house as a location where unusual phenomena are reported, including instances of moving furniture and the presence of "creepy voices."
