News & Information
Breaking a 30-year-old weightlifting record, Central High School senior Abraham Clemetson lifted 325 pounds, dedicating the historic feat to his late grandmother. This powerful achievement saw Abraham surpass a 1994 mark for the second-highest weight total in the unlimited weight class, making school history and transforming personal grief into powerful motivation.
Abraham, who has weightlifted for two years, actively pursued this specific school record when he realized other county competitors made a gold medal out of reach. He found inspiration for the 325-pound lift in his grandmother’s memory, explaining, “My entire weightlifting season was for her.” His mother, Demetria, praised his perseverance through trying times, recalling her own brave face at a meet just after her mother's passing.
What drives this remarkable young athlete next? Abraham aims for the LA 2028 Olympic trials, alongside plans to join an affordable weightlifting club and attend community college before potentially transferring to FAMU, SEU, or UF, exploring interests like cybersecurity and law enforcement.

Hernando County residents could soon see their bills climb for essential services. Commissioners will consider adopting revised solid waste disposal rates and increasing annual assessments, alongside amending non-ad valorem rates for fire rescue services at their Tuesday, June 9 meeting. These critical public hearings could directly impact household budgets across the county.
Beyond potential rate hikes, the Board will tackle crucial infrastructure and development projects. Commissioners plan to ratify applications for federal grants targeting electrical improvements and new air traffic control tower equipment at Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport. They will also award a $152,476 contract for the Ridge Manor Field renovation project and approve a $165,979.61 change order for traffic signal upgrades at Mariner Boulevard and Landover Boulevard.
With substantial spending and potential rate increases impacting every household, how will these decisions shape our community’s fiscal future and daily lives?

Seven local boxers fought their way to victory this past Memorial Day weekend, bringing home three championship belts and four second-place medals from Kissimmee. Team Frankie Boxing, led by Coach Frank Alagna, dominated the Sugar Bert Boxing Tournament, showcasing the talent brewing right here on Chambord Street. Ka’mar “Dynamite Sticks” Dames, Jayden “El Flaco” Soto, and Anthony “Antman” Page each clinched a coveted Sugar Bert belt, marking a significant win for our community.
Coach Alagna, brimming with pride, told the Sun, "I’m very proud of the boys for always giving their all in every competition." Their impressive showing also brought them face-to-face with US Olympic Bronze Medalist Omari Jones, who signed one of their new championship belts. Francesco “El Coqui” Alagna, Jimmy “Slimjim” Ramos, Christian “Blackhawk” Hall, and Cadyn “Ferocious” Fairbanks each earned second-place medals, further cementing Team Frankie's reputation.
With such an impressive haul of hardware, what new heights will these local champions reach next?

Local children and teens, ages 1 to 18, will receive free breakfasts and lunches this summer. The One Eighty Café launches its annual distribution program in Hernando County from June 10 to July 29, 2026, ensuring access to nutritious meals while school is out. Each weekly package delivers five breakfasts and five lunches, a critical support for families.
Families pick up these comprehensive meal packages weekly on Wednesdays, between 11 a.m. and noon. Two locations, Brooksville Elementary School (885 N. Broad Street) and West Hernando Middle School (14325 Ken Austin Parkway), host the distribution. Organizers encourage families to bring children; otherwise, parents or guardians complete a brief information sheet to receive meals.
Site availability shifts each year due to construction or maintenance, officials noted, but the district remains committed to supporting local families. How will you ensure your family benefits from this ongoing commitment to our community's youngest residents?
