A derogatory hot mic comment about a Brooksville resident put Commissioner John Allocco on the defensive at the June 23, 2026, Hernando BOCC meeting. Allocco remarked, "There’s a reason why some people are single forever," referring to Aja Moore after she criticized the commission’s handling of the county’s comprehensive plan. Moore directly addressed Allocco 90 minutes later, stating, "We elect leaders to debate issues, not demean people," and claiming she had been engaged for over four years.
Initially, Allocco defended his remarks, claiming Moore "regularly berates" commissioners and frequently uses profanity at meetings. Later, however, he emailed Moore an apology, calling his comment "insensitive and obviously hurtful to you." Allocco, first elected in 2016 and reelected in 2024, also told reporters he still has First Amendment rights, despite his apology.
Commissioner Allocco next faces reelection in 2028. How will this incident impact public trust in local leadership and the tone of future county discussions?
🚨 Reminder🚨Our last ECG screening event is today(6/25) at Hernando High School: Leopard Pride from 4-7pm in the gymnasium at the front of the school.
Hernando School District Athletics
Just one day remains to access critical health screenings and $20 physicals, wrapping up today, June 25, at Hernando High School. The school's gymnasium, known for "Leopard Pride," hosts the final ECG screening event and physicals from 4-7 PM, presenting a crucial, last-minute opportunity for local residents. This marks the community's last scheduled chance for these important health checks.
For just $20, secure your heart check with an ECG screening; you must pre-register and pay via the provided QR code to lock in your specific time slot. Additionally, Dr. Christian Schneider from Family Chiropractic Health Center offers $20 physicals right on-site. These physicals operate on a first-come, first-served basis and accept cash payments only.
With this final opportunity closing soon, who in our community will take advantage of these vital and conveniently accessible health services?
Hernando County Sheriff (FB Page)
Firework blasts are already echoing through Hernando County neighborhoods, but Florida law reserves those pyrotechnic displays for just a few specific days each year. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office issued a reminder: state law only permits fireworks on July 4, December 31, and January 1. Premature pops and booms can distress pets, trigger veterans, and disturb neighbors sensitive to loud noises, impacting community well-being.
As July 4th approaches, the Sheriff's Office urges safe and considerate revelry. They emphasize celebrating responsibly, mindful of those around them. Crucially, residents must leave firearms out of any holiday celebration. Firing a gun into the air remains dangerous, illegal, and can have tragic consequences, a clear message from authorities.
Can Hernando County residents embrace these guidelines, ensuring a truly safe and respectful holiday season for everyone, or will early bursts and risky behavior continue to ignite community concerns?
Florida Dept. of Health – Hernando
An extended three-day closure awaits DOH-Hernando offices in honor of America's 250th birthday, impacting anyone who might plan a visit to the Florida Department of Health in Hernando County around that time. Offices will shut their doors for Thursday, July 2, Friday, July 3, and Monday, July 6, 2026, creating a long service gap for residents and visitors alike.
This significant break celebrates the nation's quarter-millennium milestone, ensuring local DOH services are unavailable for an extended period. Regular office hours will resume promptly on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. While the offices remain closed, DOH-Hernando reminds all residents and visitors to celebrate safely over the holiday weekend. For any immediate medical emergencies, remember to call 911.
How will the community adjust to this temporary lapse in local health services as the historic celebration approaches?
Hernando County Sheriff (FB Page)
Nearly hitting an officer before colliding with a mail carrier, a driver on Cortez Boulevard dramatically highlighted the dangers of ignoring Florida's 'Move Over' law. On June 22, 2026, Lieutenant Scott Lamia conducted a traffic stop in Brooksville when a Ford pickup truck passed dangerously close to him without moving over or slowing down. The truck then struck a U.S. Postal Service vehicle that had properly shifted lanes. Thankfully, no one reported injuries.
Authorities cited the Ford driver for violating the Move Over Law, and Traffic Deputies investigated the crash. This close call, documented by body and dash cameras, powerfully illustrates the constant risks law enforcement officers, first responders, tow operators, and utility workers face daily on our roadsides. Our community must remember: drivers must move over a lane or slow down significantly when they see any authorized vehicle stopped.
Will this jarring incident be the wake-up call our community needs to truly prioritize safety and prevent future tragedies?
