News & Information
Only four percent of Boy Scouts achieve the elite Eagle Scout rank, an honor two Hernando County 15-year-olds are on the verge of claiming. Rising sophomores William Thomas and Aiden Passarella recently completed challenging final projects, delivering significant community improvements for local veterans and visitors to a natural cemetery.
Passarella, from Troop 433, constructed 20 unique red cedar benches for Alachua County's Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery after noticing rotting seating at his late grandparents' gravesite. He designed his "Lego-like" benches without glue, screws, or nails, describing them as a way to "properly reflect and mourn." Meanwhile, Thomas, of Troop 71, built two benches and two picnic tables for K9 Partners for Patriots in Brooksville, creating a much-needed outdoor space for veterans in their service dog program. Rob White, K9 Partners COO, called the effort a "great help."
These ambitious projects, requiring the boys to "come up with the idea, find the income, facilitate the project," according to Emily Thomas, not only bring them Scouting America's top honor but leave a tangible, positive mark on the community. As they prepare to don their badges, what other impacts will these accomplished young men make?

Hernando County residents will not see solid waste fees increase — at least for now. In a 4-0 vote, Commissioners rejected proposed hikes, opting to keep rates stable despite a consultant's recommendation for a 4.75 percent jump beginning January 1, 2027, to ensure departmental profitability. This decision, however, directs Scott Harper and staff to explore potential cuts to services like recycling and the acceptance of large materials, including construction and demolition waste and mobile homes.
The proposed fee structure would have increased charges for bulk items, yard waste, and tires, along with a higher disposal assessment, though the Collection Assessment would have remained unchanged. Commissioners will revisit this matter after staff revises plans. Will the community sacrifice essential services to maintain current rates, or will fees ultimately climb to cover operational expenses?

A raccoon attacked an unvaccinated cat, triggering a 60-day rabies alert across a key section of Spring Hill. The Florida Department of Health in Hernando County confirmed the rabies case on June 10, 2026, warning residents that wild animals in the area currently carry the disease. This impacts everyone living or visiting near Norvell Road, urging immediate caution.
The alert covers the area bordered by Elgin Boulevard to the north, Spring Hill Drive to the south, Barclay Avenue to the east, and U.S. Highway 19 (Commercial Way) to the west. Authorities stress crucial precautions: immunize your pets, keep them supervised and leashed, and secure livestock. Avoid contact with any wild or stray animals—do not feed them or attract them with outdoor food sources. If an animal bites your pet or you, seek immediate medical or veterinary attention and contact Hernando County Animal Services or DOH-Hernando.
With rabies now confirmed in our wild animal population, what proactive steps will you take to keep your family and pets safe during this alert period?

Political musical chairs dramatically reshaped Hernando County's election landscape this week, as two sitting officials swapped races and a county commissioner immediately resigned. State Rep. Jeff Holcomb exited his reelection bid to run for a County Commission seat, while Commissioner Brian Hawkins abandoned his District 2 reelection campaign to pursue Holcomb’s State House spot. Hawkins' immediate resignation left his District 2 seat open, triggering a last-minute scramble that drew community organizer Diane Greenwell into a crowded field of five Republican candidates.
In the District 2 universal primary, Greenwell joins real estate agent Silvia Dukes, who leads fundraising with $23,000, alongside Kathryn Birren, Maxwell Glenn, and James Scavetta. For State House District 53, Hawkins now challenges John Carroll, who boasts appointments from Gov. Ron DeSantis, plus two other candidates, in a heavily Republican district. Holcomb, meanwhile, faces Marvin Baynham in a closed Republican primary for County Commission District 4, following Commissioner Jerry Campbell's withdrawal.
With primary elections slated for August 18th, how will these unprecedented shifts ultimately impact our community's representation?
