News & Information
Stalled for nearly a decade, the County Line Road widening project just secured its $85 million funding, paving the way for crucial improvements between Mariner Boulevard and the Suncoast Parkway. County Commissioners unanimously approved the complex funding strategy, which involves $20 million for land acquisition and $65 million for construction, shared between Hernando, Pasco counties, and the state.
This partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) requires each county to contribute $5 million for land acquisition by July 1, 2028, matched by $10 million from FDOT. Similarly, each county pledges another $5 million for construction by July 1, 2030, with FDOT adding $10 million and seeking a State Infrastructure Bank loan. Public Works Director Scott Herring reports officials are already setting aside funds for initial land acquisition in the Five-Year Capital Improvement Program.
FDOT will manage design and development, while the counties commit to local funding and future maintenance, splitting loan repayments. Officials will soon draft an interlocal agreement with Pasco County outlining financial terms and maintenance duties. Will this long-awaited collaboration finally untangle our local traffic, or will new hurdles emerge as terms are finalized?

Sharp questions about a controversial golf course fire, approved by state foresters during Hernando County's recent burn ban, erupted this week even as commissioners unanimously lifted the county-wide restriction. Fire Chief Paul Heisenmier requested the ban's end on May 26, citing a significant drop in the drought index and recent rains.
Commissioner John Allocco pressed Chief Heisenmier on the May 16 Oak Hills Golf Course blaze. There, a contractor used an air curtain incinerator for a permitted burn when the fire escaped and ignited nearby brush. Allocco questioned the rationale for approving such a permit during a ban, suggesting it helps developers save money at the county's expense. He asked if the county could bill the developer for assistance, prompting County Attorney Jon Jouben to research the possibility.
Commissioner Brian Hawkins highlighted concerning conditions at the time: 15-20 mph winds, residential homes within 800 to 1,000 yards, and a congested road nearby. How will the county balance development needs with community safety when facing similar burn permit requests?

Cypress Lake Preserve shuts down temporarily starting June 1, 2026, for scheduled maintenance. Hernando County Parks and Recreation closes the preserve for what they expect to be a three-to-four-day period of essential work, impacting most visitor access to the local natural area. This critical upkeep ensures the preserve remains in top condition for our community.
This brief closure encompasses the entire preserve, except for a small section accessible from Cortez Boulevard and Paul R. Steckle Lane (the circled area). Visitors must plan accordingly and completely avoid the closed grounds to ensure their safety and the safety of the maintenance crews. This dedicated time allows workers unimpeded access to safely complete all necessary tasks without interruption.
What benefits will this focused, short-term effort bring to the preserve's long-term health, and what can visitors anticipate when the gates fully reopen?
