Your Memorial Day plans might involve a long weekend, but your trash pickup schedule won't change. Hernando County residents will find most government services, including all county offices, library services, and bus transit (TheBus), closed Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day. These essential services resume normal operations Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

While many county functions take a break, your regular trash, recycling, and yard waste collection continues as scheduled, thanks to Coastal Waste & Recycling. Good news for those last-minute cleanup projects: the Main Landfill, located at 14450 Landfill Rd., Brooksville, FL 34614, remains open. However, the West and East Hernando Solid Waste Convenience Centers will close Monday, as they do every week. The Hernando County Government Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, begins at 9:00am.

Over $12.9 million in construction contracts for a new fire station and critical road improvements headline next Tuesday's Hernando County Commission meeting, directly impacting our community's safety and transportation. Commissioners will consider awarding $6.5 million for Fire Station 15 construction and a $6.4 million design contract for Barclay Avenue roadway upgrades at their May 26, 2026, session, starting at 9:00 AM at the John Law Ayers Commission Chambers in Brooksville.

Beyond these major projects, Commissioners will also address a range of community issues, from proclaiming May 2026 as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month to approving shoreline and walking path enhancements at Jenkins Creek and Linda Pedersen Parks. They will also consider a letter supporting a swim platform's relocation near Linda Pedersen Park and review proposed public transportation grant agreements with the Florida Department of Transportation. The School Board heard a framework for these "living resource" guidelines, designed to clarify proper AI use and establish it as a tool, not a replacement for educators.

Students need teacher permission for specific tasks like research, data analysis, or writing assistance, using approved tools like Canva AI, Khanmigo AI, or Microsoft Copilot depending on their grade level. Staff also gain access to AI for job-related tasks including lesson planning and communication. However, the guidelines strictly prohibit creating deepfakes, impersonation, generating inappropriate or misleading content, and entering private student information into public AI tools.
