County leaders want to shake up how Hernando pays for infrastructure, proposing major policy shifts to state lawmakers. They plan to ask for more flexibility with tourism tax dollars and want electric vehicle owners to contribute comparably to road maintenance, directly impacting local projects and resident contributions.
Commissioners suggested an unspecified tourism tax increase, arguing current restrictions on funding only marketing and capital projects hinder necessary infrastructure growth. Public Works Director Scott Herring cited the state's success with similar flexibility. Separately, the Board seeks to hide bid information for public works projects from contractors until after the process, preventing manipulation and ensuring fair competition—a move Commissioner Brian Hawkins likened to "not giving the bidders the answers to the test."
Officials also pushed to expand Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) eligibility for counties and allow electronic processing for owner-builder permits. A controversial proposal to remove commissioners from the canvassing board died after the Supervisor of Elections opposed it, underscoring ongoing debates about election transparency. With these and other significant changes, including early talks about re-evaluating property tax and insurance valuations, how will these proposals reshape Hernando County's financial future?
