News & Information
Dozens of dedicated volunteers and 116 golfers recently teamed up, raising over $18,500 for local non-profits at Brooksville Elks Lodge #2582's third annual Charity Golf Tournament. This impressive effort, supported by over a dozen businesses, directly benefits the Life Center, Youth & Family Advocates New Beginnings Youth Shelter, and K9 Partners for Patriots. Elks grants and charity committees will now decide how to allocate these funds, actively seeking organizations most in need.
Business owner Dana Cutlip conceptualized the event nearly four years ago to unite members, friends, guests, and the local business community. Gary Ashness of the Elks Lodge noted the significant effort involved, with a small committee putting in "dozens and dozens of hours" to coordinate, contact people, and secure sponsors. This year, golfers filled 29 of 30 potential teams at Southern Hills, a "phenomenal" turnout organizers attribute to the course itself and appealing raffle prizes.
Organizers feel confident the next tournament, with advertising likely starting in November, will fill up within a month. How will this long-standing organization continue to expand its impact and reach even more of our community's pressing needs?

Answering phones once overwhelmed seventh grader Jayden Vazquez. Now, he confidently takes detailed orders for caramel macchiatos, thanks to a unique job training program brewing at Winding Waters K-8. Operating twice weekly, the Yellow Jackets Cafe pairs high school students from Weeki Wachee with younger Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students, teaching vital workplace and communication skills through a real-world coffee delivery service.
Students with varying abilities, including autism and ADHD, gain hands-on experience selling items like brownies and coffee to teachers and staff. This cross-campus collaboration expanded Weeki Wachee High School's decade-old coffee shop program, offering older students like Mckayla McClure and Marcus Cremeans leadership roles. While high schoolers prepare drinks, younger students handle orders and deliveries, benefiting from mentorship. Proceeds from sales reinvest directly into supplies and fund experiences like field trips, fostering independence and building essential life skills for these students' futures.
What other innovative programs are preparing our community's youth with such practical, impactful opportunities?

Ever wish you could directly shape decisions affecting Hernando County's future? Now’s your chance. Local leaders are seeking residents to fill key volunteer roles, directly impacting everything from affordable housing to construction oversight as Hernando County Commissioners open applications for critical committee positions.
The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee seeks residents who can share specific expertise: a banking or mortgage professional connected to affordable housing, an essential services representative, a for-profit affordable housing provider, and someone from home building labor. The Board of Construction and Regulation also needs an architect/engineer and a consumer representative. These voluntary positions require applicants to live in Hernando County and be registered voters.
Want to make a tangible difference in our community? Apply by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026. Will your experience be the missing piece on one of these vital committees?

Future leaders, ages 12-13, get a free, hands-on look at law enforcement this summer. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office welcomes students to a two-day Junior Citizen's Academy, promising an inside perspective on local law enforcement operations through interactive demonstrations. This free program actively engages young residents, offering a unique chance to understand community safety and service.
Participants choose from sessions on either June 4 & 5 or June 8 & 9, attending daily from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 18900 Cortez Boulevard. Doors open at 12:45 p.m., with pickup beginning at 4:45 p.m. Spots are limited, so interested students should sign up quickly to join this unique experience.
What insights will these young citizens gain about their local Sheriff's Office, and how might this early exposure shape their roles within our community?
