Three local flag football players just secured their college spots. Gia Valenti, Emma Brown, and Maddy Depeterillo officially signed to continue playing flag football in college. Valenti committed to Indiana Wesleyan. Emma Brown and Maddy Depeterillo will both join the flag football program at Shelton State.
Shelton State College Head Coach Doug Rogers attended the signing. His presence marked this important step for the athletes as they prepare for collegiate competition.

Last-minute cast changes and a demanding rehearsal schedule couldn't deter Stage West, which opens Neil Simon’s "Plaza Suite" this Friday. The classic comedy, set in 1968, explores human foibles and relationship challenges through three distinct couples occupying the same elegant Plaza Hotel suite over the next two weeks.
Real-life married couple Michelle and Mathew Root navigate fictional marital discord in the first act, with Mathew admitting the role's mood shifts proved challenging. Matthew Argintar, a last-minute replacement, learned his lines for a movie producer role in just two weeks, crediting co-star Wendy Hunsberger for her help. Brian Brijbag and Denise Glickler complete the trio of acts, portraying parents trying to coax their daughter from a locked bathroom before her wedding. Director Linda Willding, who previously directed "Plaza Suite" professionally, overcame production hurdles including actors dropping out and limited rehearsal space.
The six actors skillfully portray the humanity in Simon’s witty observations, carefully avoiding slapstick or farce. They aim to make audiences laugh while connecting emotionally. Will the play's timeless look at relationships still resonate with today's audience?

Future first responders and community leaders are taking shape right here in Hernando County. A free, five-day camp offers girls entering grades 6-12 an intensive dive into emergency preparedness and leadership, with applications for the June 22-26, 2026 session closing June 1, 2026.
Hernando County Emergency Management hosts HERricane HERnando 2026 at the Emergency Operations Center, providing young women crucial life-saving skills like CPR and emergency response training. Participants tackle disaster preparedness activities, leadership workshops, and team-building challenges. The program also hones crisis communication skills and explores diverse public safety careers through hands-on experiences and mentorship, building confidence and empowering future leaders. Thanks to the Duke Energy Foundation and KPMG, this transformative opportunity remains completely free.

Our community's most vulnerable children just gained a powerful new advocate. County Commissioners Jerry Campbell and Brian Hawkins yesterday attended the groundbreaking of the You Thrive Children’s Advocacy Center, launching an 11,000 square-foot facility poised to protect local children and provide vital support to families navigating the devastating impact of abuse.
This crucial project secured state funding through Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia, with local Florida Representative Jeff Holcomb of District 53 also championing its financial support. The brand new center dedicates itself entirely to this mission, promising a safe, dedicated space and essential resources for those who need it most within our community.
