News & Information

Facing speeding cars or ongoing traffic headaches in your Hernando County neighborhood? Residents now have a direct pipeline to address these concerns. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office provides an online tool, guiding locals on how to submit crucial traffic enforcement requests, directly empowering deputies to pinpoint and tackle problem areas. This system offers a clear pathway for community members to act on safety.

Through the Sheriff's website, residents quickly provide essential details: specific location, time of day, and the exact type of violation they observe. This valuable community input empowers deputies, enabling them to better address ongoing traffic concerns and significantly improve overall roadway safety across Hernando County. Officials consistently stress that traffic safety is a shared responsibility, underscoring how direct resident involvement makes a real difference in maintaining safer streets.

What transformative impact will our community see when every resident actively takes the wheel in reporting concerns?

New homes in Hernando County just got pricier. Commissioners voted 4-1 to raise impact fees on developers, aiming to fund vital fire safety and EMS infrastructure despite one commissioner's claims these fees fuel inflation. In other key decisions, they rejected a survey for a manatee protection zone in Mud Creek, opting instead for cheaper solutions like increased signage, and postponed a contentious 72-unit townhome development on Bourassa Boulevard amid resident opposition and unresolved road issues.

Fire Chief Paul Hasenmeier asserted the county desperately needs more fire stations, requiring one for every 6,300 homes at $3.5 million annually. Commissioner Steve Champion, casting the lone 'no' vote, argued these fees inflate costs, asking, "When is it ever enough?" Champion also pushed back on the manatee survey, calling concerns a "nonexistent problem" from "busybody" residents. Meanwhile, neighbors near Bourassa Boulevard implored Commissioners to reject the townhome project entirely, with Casey May writing, "The small town charm is gone."

Commissioners, however, upheld private property rights despite resident appeals. Though postponed, the townhome project still appears likely to pass, but can Hernando County truly balance growth's demands with preserving its unique character and environment?

Dominating host Central 26-7 last Thursday at their spring jamboree, Springstead football signaled a powerful rebound after a rare losing season in 2025. The Eagles rushed for 166 yards against Central, as Jeremiah Brown and William Figueroa fueled their offense with key runs and scores. Earlier in the day, a formidable East Ridge squad from Clermont beat Springstead 14-6 and Central 24-6.

Springstead coach Mike Garofano called East Ridge a "very good opponent" and a "good test" for his Eagles, noting their challenge with East Ridge's fast-paced, no-huddle offense. Central coach Jim Pusateri felt "pretty good" about his team's physical play and new Slot-T offense, stating, "Everything you’ve seen here tonight is correctable."

With the regular season still months away, how will these early insights shape the Eagles' and Bears' strategies as they aim to turn spring lessons into fall victories?
