Our local housing market just flashed a major signal for the months ahead: new pending single-family home sales in Hernando County surged an impressive 12.3%, pointing to strong buyer demand despite a dip in actual closed transactions.

Buyers put 449 single-family properties under contract in April, up from 400 recorded in April 2025. While closed home sales dropped 21.5%, median single-family prices saw only a mild 1.7% contraction, hitting $322,970 compared to $328,445 last year. Sellers still secured 95.8% of their original asking price, though properties spent slightly longer on the market, averaging 84 days.

Meanwhile, townhomes and condos saw value appreciation, with median prices climbing 2% to $255,000, up from $250,000 in April 2025. This segment, however, experienced fewer closed sales and new pending contracts, yet sellers moved properties 15% faster, in an average of 91 days. What do these mixed signals mean for homeowners and hopeful buyers as we head deeper into summer?

Hernando Sun (Feed)

Hernando County schools stand to gain nearly $400,000, thanks to a newly approved partnership. School Board members recently greenlit an arrangement between Wilton Simpson Technical College and ABC Apprenticeship, allowing the district to retain 10% of state funding as a pass-through agency for adult apprenticeship programs.

ABC Apprenticeship provides adults with paid on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and certifications in nine trades, including electrical and plumbing. Though the program doesn't initially target Hernando County students, the district acts as a vital education agency, processing state funds for ABC's more than 800 current students and keeping its 10% share for local initiatives. Currently, enrollees travel to ABC's Tampa chapter, but officials see potential for local programs if employers can gather 20-25 apprentices for a specific trade.

District leaders expressed optimism this initial partnership lays groundwork for bringing these valuable trade programs directly to WTC within two years, potentially generating even more revenue for our community. Will local employers step up to bring these training opportunities closer to home?

Hernando County Government (FB Page)

Major closures will affect Hernando County government offices tomorrow, June 19, 2026, as the community observes Juneteenth. This widespread shutdown means most county services will temporarily pause, though a handful of essential operations will continue uninterrupted. Residents planning a library visit will find Spring Hill and East Hernando branches closed, reopening Saturday, June 20. All other county offices and services impacted by the holiday will resume their regular hours on Monday, June 22.

But fear not for your essential daily routines. Crucial public services will largely maintain their schedules. Waste services, including both the West Hernando and East Hernando Solid Waste Convenience Centers and the Main Landfill, will operate during normal hours. Coastal Waste & Recycling confirms it will stick to its scheduled residential trash, recycling, and yard waste collection. Plus, TheBus continues its regular routes, keeping residents on the move.

As Hernando County respectfully marks Juneteenth, which vital services will you count on to keep our community running this Friday?
